For those who've had GW lock up while playing or after logging in...
There was a thread here (that seems to have disappeared) where people were having the exact same problem(s) as I was:
- Log into GW, and shortly after game play, the characters on screen freeze. The sound is intermittent, as is mouse movement, and either eventually, your PC locks up or you're unable to minimize GW to get back to your desktop
- Log into GW, and immediately the characters on screen freeze, sound is intermittent, as is mouse movement, and again, PC locks up.
Last night, I attempted to play GW, and as soon as I'd log in and get to the town my character was last in, I'd experience a lock-up. I'd love to blame this on my video card (nVidia Ge-Force 7600 GS), but I experienced the same thing on my ATI Radeon 9800, which is why my sister bought me a new video card.
I've updated my video and soundcard drivers (Creative Audigy), cleaned my HD, yadda yadda, and I still have the same issue.
The reason for my posting is this - as soon as I got into GW today, I made the window smaller, so that it's running basically as another application on my desktop. Granted, the graphics are skewed like this, but the game has not locked up YET. If there's anyone reading this who have had the same issues, I'd like to see if you'd try to play GW in a smaller window and see if it still locks up on you, and post here.
I have no idea what this implies, if it implies anything, but I haven't been able to play much for months, and no one has been able to provide me with a reason why that has applied to me and my machine (which I built myself). GW is the only game I play that I experience this problem with so that leads me to believe it's game specific. I requested help from PlayNC, and that got me no where so here I am again. Looked for the thread someone else had posted who had the same problems as I did, and it's apparently gone.
So... if any of this applies to you, and you're able to get the game to run in window mode, please let us know.

You could try this.
I don't know if you are using a dual core or not, but you probably have at least Hyperthreading, so it *might* help. If it does work there is a guide around here for making guild wars always run on a single logical processor.

Thanks immortius!
I'm running a single core processor, but I'll see if I can't find the other guide :-)

Ok, well I got to play GW for longer than normal, but it still locked up. At least this time I could tell that it was my entire PC that locked up, not just GW (at times I thought GW was locked up so bad I couldn't access my desktop and assumed it was still running).
So that didn't really work. But I'm still trying!

I had the same problem too but I turned off v sync and most graphics to low resolution. I still get some crashes once in a while when i play too long but rarely. My vid card atm is a Nvidia GeForce 5600 FX

My comp tends to lock up with GW ever since I got my new monitor. Of course, thats because I'm running it at max settings on a 22inch WS monitor(higher resolution) running firefox for guildwiki and alt-tabbing between GW and AIM during a batttle.
I wonder why its freezing....

Thanks for the heads up on the V-Sync - I've turned mine off so I'll see what happens. Only thing with my crashing (in regards to video) is that this is a new video card - I was getting crashes on my ATI Radeon 9800 also, and it started before EotN also. But I'm open to try anything at this point!

*lol* hmm.. I wonder
I run my PC on a Sharp Aquos 19in TV. Even with everything else but my firewall and antivirus shut down (and I tried with those not running also), I still get lockups.
But still, I press on!

i'm glad i'm not the only one who has these issues. it rarely happens but when it does, it's rather annoying (especially when going for survivor). this doesn't happen with any other cpu/gpu intensive program i use so i'm still going to blame guild wars for it.

first ty livingdeadgirl for posting this thread because it gave me a bit of peace because i have the same problem and i thought it was the computer that was having problems and i just upgraded it a fews weeks ago, which was making me really mad.
second is it my impression or since eotn there has been an increase on graphical problems with gw???
i hope anet gives the proper attention to this problem, even if there are still only a few replies to this thread because i'm pretty sure a lot of ppl are suffering from this "glitch" and think its a computer problem and not Gw.

Good Question, I have the same problem of Lock ups/freeze ups ,but I'm sorry to say that I've asked the same question many times in different forums, and its just pointless to ask "why is GW freezing up/locking up" , NO ONE OUT THERE HAS REALLY FOUND THE ROOT TO THIS PROBLEM. and its always the same answers Oh like Update your drivers, reinstall the client, use contig ,get new vid card, clean your system of dust, turn down your graphics, reformat, run GW in window, use the -dsound etc.,dump all running processes, and a few others that I may not have mentioned. some of these may have worked temporarily, but not really a solution,Its probably an ANET problem, but to all those people that have given their time and their efforts to solve this, Hats off to you, Thank You.

Some people on this forum (including myself) have been seeing freezes with GeForce 7 cards since the GW:EN preview weekend. The GeForce 7-specific freezes are definitely an issue with the Nvidia driver: sometimes, if you wait long enough after the freeze, the computer will BSOD with an error message suggesting a thread in the video driver has locked up, which the game shouldn't be able to cause without some help from a buggy driver.
Though if you had this problem with a Radeon too I don't think complaining to Nvidia will help you.

Trend Micro locking video screens during GW play
I have had the same problem since July.
I thought for sure that it was the GW:EN download of 22k+ files.
It turned out to be Trend Micro Internet Security.
I changed to Norton Anti-Virus and have played up to 8 hours in a single setting with no video locks. Previously could not even play for an hour.
Secondarily, if you have Trend Micro, you may notice other "quirks":
1) Cannot switch users due to not enough resources
2) Cannot open the Add/remove software listing as quickly or not at all
3) Other apparently memory related problems, seeming to act like trojan on system
You may also have felt like reinstalling the OS, well don't, just pitch Trend Micro.
EVERYTHING is working great now!
